Hi everybody – every year applicants come to me and they say look, if I can’t get a place at a “Top 7” school, then the ROI is clearly not there.
Sometimes true, sometimes really not.
You really have to look at the salary data at even, say, Top 12 or Top 14 schools. At graduation and 3 months after graduation, what percent of classes have a really good job?
And I understand, if you’re interested in getting a job in VC or PE, maybe there’s a subset of schools where you really have to go. But if you’re interested in technology, consulting, and these days, even investment banking, you can do really well outside of the Top 7.
So don’t be myopic, don’t just try to think about what’s going to impress your friends — really take a look at the data and remember that school reputations change over time.
For example, Chicago Booth did not have the same reputation ten years ago that it has today, particularly in Asia. School reputations change over time.
So, really do your homework!
