Hi everybody – clearly we are in an age of video essays, Zoom interviews, and the content of what you say is the most important. However, style does matter!
I was working with an accounting applicant, obviously heavy into numbers. Admissions committees may already have a little bias against somebody like that and now this person interviews in a black suit, white shirt. No posters, no art, no plants – a very austere presentation.
Why do that?
If you have a hobby like hiking, have a beautiful poster of a national park. If you love cooking, have a beautiful poster of paella or something.
You can see that I have a Cubist painting in the background. I love art and I have some texture. And I’m not wearing a traditional white shirt.
When I worked in Europe, I saw that light purple can be very pleasing to the eye.
So, my point to you is, to use a little bit of style and a little bit of color and don’t come off as austere.
